Reception - Attenborough & Nightingale

A note from Miss May and Miss Hallett

Welcome to Reception

Welcome to Reception at Knowle Primary School. Our aim is to provide a warm, happy and nurturing environment where every child feels valued, confident and ready to learn, laying strong foundations for their educational journey both here and beyond.

In Reception, communication sits at the heart of everything we do. We place a strong emphasis on oracy, vocabulary development and high-quality interactions, ensuring that children are given rich opportunities to talk, listen and express themselves. Through meaningful conversations, skilled questioning (including BLANK questioning) and carefully modelled language, we support children to become confident communicators.

Our learning environment has been thoughtfully designed using HighScope principles, with clear zoning and communication-friendly spaces that promote independence, exploration and purposeful play. Each area is planned to encourage interaction, language development and collaboration, allowing children to engage deeply in their learning.

Our class names are inspired by influential figures from around the world and throughout history. This year, we are excited to learn about David Attenborough and Florence Nightingale, alongside many other engaging topics. By celebrating inspirational individuals, we aim to nurture ambition, curiosity and aspiration in all of our children from the very start of their school journey.

Throughout the year, children will explore a range of topics through our Super 6 Curriculum, alongside carefully planned learning opportunities that respond to their interests, schemas and developmental needs. We extend their learning through rich storytelling, the introduction of ambitious vocabulary and a stimulating, language-rich environment that supports both play and purposeful learning.

We value strong partnerships with families and encourage you to share your child’s learning from home via our Class Dojo page—we love celebrating these moments together. If you have any questions or need support, please do not hesitate to get in touch; we are always happy to help.

We are looking forward to a year filled with learning, discovery and fun. In the meantime, please explore our Facebook and Instagram pages to see examples of the wonderful learning taking place, and check below for useful information for the year ahead.

O

P.E

Please note that we have PE on a Friday, so please remember to dress your child in their full PE kit on this day. Please ensure your child has their coloured PE top, PE hoodie, PE bottoms, hair tied up and jewellery removed on these days so that they are ready and safe to take part.

Thank you for your cooperation.

FOREST SCHOOL

Please note that we have Forest School on a Wednesday. Please ensure your child has a labelled pair of Wellington boots. You may keep the boots in school or bring them each week. Your child will need to wear school uniform on this day. We will provide waterproofs.

HOMEWORK

In Reception, the children will bring home weekly sheets to practice a range of learning that we have already covered in class, covering a literacy, maths and topic activity. In addition, the children will bring home a Numbots login at the start of the year. Please support your children in using this at home to enable them to progress further.

READING

In Reception, the children will bring home a reading book based upon their phonological stage that they will read to you and a library book for you to share together. Children should bring in their reading records every day and are encouraged to read every night at home. Please do encourage your child to read at home. It'll only take 5 to 10 minutes and will make a tremendous difference to their confidence and attainment in class!

Thank you for your cooperation.

STAR OF THE WEEK

Star of the Week will be awarded to a different child every Friday afternoon for being a superstar all week! You will be invited in to celebrate with them at our Star of the Week assembly from around Spring term.
